Community Service Requirements
Overview

The major purpose of the community service program at Hasbrouck Heights High School is to communicate to everyone that a well-rounded education is more than achievement in the core curriculum. It is a program that will involve various agencies providing opportunities for students, families, and staff members to become participants in helping meet the needs of many people. Students will be able to meet and work with people of all ages, capabilities, and interests who will teach and enrich their lives.

The Board of Education recognizes the need to develop within students a sense of social responsibility in addition to a commitment to their academic and co-curricular endeavors. By providing students with numerous opportunities for service to their community, we believe we will help students achieve their full potential as active and productive members of their society. Community service will be indicated on the end of the year report card.

The objective of the community service requirement for graduation focuses on the development of character, self-esteem, and leadership qualities attained not only through academic achievement, but also through a contribution to one’s community. The Hasbrouck Heights Public School System believes that community service involves not only a service to the school community but also to one’s local, state, national, and global community.

Hasbrouck Heights High School joins many schools throughout our country which are requiring their youth to participate in community service. Through participation in various community service projects, we expect students to:
 •     demonstrate an ability to perform a community service individually or as part of a group
• recognize personal responsibilities to the larger community
• demonstrate an active concern for the good of the larger community
• demonstrate learning through experienced-based activities
• demonstrate the ability to make difficult judgments
• be able to reflect on personal values

Color-coded Community Service forms are available outside the High School Office
